I understand working out comedic material, but SNL needs to appease their advertisers, so I can defend both positions here.

I'd side with the comedian, though. Just because a joke isn't funny or is offensive when taken out of context doesn't make it any less of a joke, and when you're job is to try to push boundaries for a laugh, shit happens. Sometimes jokes fall flat, or offend... Think SNL should've had him apologize and hid him in the writers room for a while. Firing him seems harsh. But again, advertisers...

Honestly, it seemed to me more like he was using it as satire to poke fun at racist people ignorant of asian culture. I'm pretty sure an SNL comedian would be socially aware enough not to publicly use that term seriously. Anyway, the whole thing was pretty unfunny. I agree with you. I defend comedians rights to say whatever they want.

But I also defend the studios rights to say we dont want that person, because of the things they have said. Even if its hypocritical, even if it was said as a joke, whatever. Thats their right.

It is something all comedians need to be aware of. Make the jokes. I love them. My favorite comedians are ones people say are offensive. Just know that it may come back to bite you in the ass.

And youre right, actually. Being funny DOES help. I defended Kramers racist jokes when they happened, as jokes, but they werent funny. If they were, the backlash wouldnt have been nearly as crazy as it was.

Pretty much where I'm at.

I've listened to some of the podcast stuff he was criticized for (as a result of this news, that is. Never heard of the guy before today), and much like the Kramer thing if he were able to deliver the joke in a way that wasn't just flat-out offensive, the backlash probably wouldn't be so severe. He seems like he's trying too hard to be edgy and failing miserably at it, but he's still at least attempting comedy.

That said, SNL are entirely within their right to can the guy. I guess Andrew Yang agreed to meet with him and feels he shouldn't be fired, for what that's worth.
