Almost every other major RPG series has moved on from them since, like, Gen 6, but Pokemon fans defend random encounters as the BEST encounters. Like, what the hell?

At least Repels existed even back in Gen 1 if you didn't want to deal with the randoms. How many RPGs back in the mid 90s gave you that option?

The fact that Pokemon is a game based around collecting the random enemies you face and not simply defeating them to level up makes random encounters feel more appropriate for this series compared to something like Final Fantasy. I'm glad they give us repels for when we don't want to deal with them though.

That's why I liked Let's Go's system for Pokemon much better. Physical models not only make the world feel more alive, you can choose what you want to fight/try to catch.

So... some games have it where you can see a generic sprite but the in-battle enemies are still random, I still consider those random battles, is just something I wanna say first. I don't care either way randos are just as fine as generic sprites.

That said; I like how Pokemon ONLY has battles IN grass or caves, with walkways to avoid most of it. And you're battling for new party members, not just levels; OR you can fight trainers for double experience.

It's basically all about the quality of life features.

This. Though as mentioned, Sword/Shield as well as the Let's Go games don't have random encounters. At least, not in the way the past games did.

I like seeing my enemies coming so I know if I want to avoid them or take them on.

if I were playing Pokemon, I would walk right around most of those Ratatta and Pidgey sprites.

I remember trying to navigate that dark ass cave because I didn't have Flash...

There's nothing wrong with them, other then they can get annoying. If you don't like an rpg with em, dont play them. Besides its Pokemon your supposed to catch em all. Or at least the ones you want.

Pokemon random encounters have never been an issue, since you're supposed to be looking for Pokemon.

Plus, there's pathways you can take around the grass, and Repels to use if you don't wanna fight (or if you're in a cave or out at sea).

I guess overworld models isn't the worst thing in the world, but Pokemon games have become too handholdy for me recently.
