I got to the part in the castle where there is a shooting range, from what I understand I can get bottle caps but I'm not sure what I would do with those or if they are even worth trying for

Yes, but rarely and only if you're low on it.

When I fill up those Treasures with three different colored jewels does that just increase the value to sell or do they have some other purpose?

Completing treasures with jewels increases the value. Getting all the caps gives you a big money reward. Magnum ammo is rare, but drops. Buy a pistol as soon as you can. The red 9 is the best imo

Increases value

Ex:

Beerstein w/o catseye = 10k
Beerstein w/ 1 eye = 12k
Beerstein w/ all eyes = 20k

I keep saving all my money because I never know if I start upgrading a gun I will end up being able to buy a better version soon anyway

There aren't that many types of weapons

Only handguns have a lot of choices, and none of them are bad picks. Each one can get the job done, and it's simply a matter of taste

I'm towards the end of the game on the island, and all I keep getting is shotgun ammo. I've been low on handgun ammo since the end of the castle and I just can't fucking find any. I've had my handgun with like 3 bullets left for at least an hour or two of gameplay now.

Like, all my ammo is shotgun and mine thrower darts. I think I have 3 handgun and maybe 2 rifle bullets? And that's it. Haven't seen magnum bullets in ages lol.

Get the TMP btw, it's better than all of the handguns. Aim for the legs of regular Ganados and suplex them every chance you get. Suplexes prevent Plagas from spawning.
