This is the only reason Id support the death penalty.

It stands as one of Chicago's most horrific crimes, in large part because of small details that are impossible to shake: The promise of a juice box that lured the 9-year-old boy off a playground and into an alley, and the basketball he dropped when he was shot and killed there.

This is a terrible thing, but how do you negotiate down to 25 years?

I mean that seems like a lot just for driving a car. But of course here in Canada he would have gotten five and let out in three.

The DA offers it. He gives them evidence/testimony with his plea bargain and instead of being in prison the rest of his life, he'll be out in under 25 (likely)

Which is basically a large portion of his life, and what can he contribute to society on release? Technology is advancing like crazy.

He wont do well in prison. Im sure buddy has friends there plus he killed a kid. So in general hes fairly fucked. A guy ran a kid over in Edmonton and killed him. He got kidnapped by some unrelated (AFAIK) people (they dressed as cops, went to his house and said You know what this is about.) they beat him and cut off one of his digits before dumping him in a ditch in the middle of winter.

Well, that's a tough thing to know. They are isolated from a lot of things, but it's not like people who were sentenced in the 80s and are now being let out

I don't know how Illinois' sentencing works. In New York, we have a 2/3 for time. So if you got sentenced for 24 years, you could be released in 16. 16 is even better than 25.

At that point, it's up to the parole board. So if he's been a good prisoner...maybe even gotten a degree or two, he could be let out earlier

True. Imagine being locked up in Alcatraz for two decades and coming back to see how everything had changed.
