I think once something is like 18 to 20 years removed from when it was massive, it's easier to look at it with a rosier view. I liked them in 2001 but I don't necessarily care for them now. Some bands from back then are making awesome current music and are big live acts, so that's great (Tool, Slipknot, Korn). They're basically the next elder statesmen for metal right after Metallica / Iron Maiden / Megadeth. I know the metal purists will hate that statement. I don't know if Bizkit will ever enter the "respectability" category. I also don't harbor a hate for them really. The ability to create a memorable image or persona, as well as create an aesthetic is just as important with popular, mainstream music. For that reason Limp Bizkit can't be the worst on that list. Fred may be a mediocre rapper, some of his band mates are maybe only slightly above competent musicians, and the majority of the lyrics are laughable -- but he's wildly entertaining. The group created a unique image that definitely made them stand apart from other nu metal bands from that time period. Plus they were all good entertainers. On the flipside -- Train is insanely vanilla and boring, Maroon 5 is boring and vanilla aside from the small celebrity the vocalist acquired through hosting shows and bullshit, Dave Matthews Bland isn't memorable aside from being the Nickelback sacrificial lamb in their heyday, and Imagine Dragons has nothing that's particularly stand-out about them. Florida Georgia Line only has one "hit" (as far as I'm aware?). Panic! At the Disco has their own style and aesthetic, but it's not particularly entertaining - and the music is obnoxious, even if the vocalist is talented. Mumford and Sons are basically Portlandia and Kia Commercials The Band. KoRn was instrumental in the whole nu metal subgenre (not saying that's a particularly "good" thing), and were actually talented. The only reason why I put Limp Bizkit above them is because Fred was/is wildly entertaining and the music has a humorous nostalgia attached to it. Creed is also entertaining/charming with the hilarity of their lyrical content. That also shows you the power of marketing. Once MTV starts promoting something else, the older bands get dropped like a bad habit and they got dropped pretty hard. I want to see what happened to all the kids who went to the Bizkit show at Woodstock 99 and tore down the fencing and crowdsurfed on it during Break Stuff.
