when people "can't" tell the difference, would that be a sign of a lack of social maturity or something else?

we've all made jokes in poor taste at some point, and these are learning experiences. but what about constant offenders? especially over the SAME subject.

Those are just assholes who feel entitled to say what they want to say and don't care how they affect other people. Or worst, enjoy making those people uncomfortable. I'm in not the business of giving assholes anymore time than I absolutely have to, and I encourage others to do the same. If the social cost of being an asshole gets high enough, even the most stubborn asshole will reconsider his commitment to being an asshole.

I know I can always count on a "lighten up" or a "I was just playing" once they get confronted over it.

do you think the level of knowledge over the subject helps these "jokes?"

Sometimes its not so obvious if the guy delivering the crass joke already has a record of being an asshole to people. You have to take peoples history into account when interpreting whether something thats on the boundaries are actually a joke or malicious.

My mind is an open book, do you find it entertaining? At least be original in your responses then.

If they come back to an uncomfortable joke and use that knowledge to create context it can turn that joke from being edgy or tasteless into a commentary on a situation. It's especially helpful at pointing out examples when an contradiction forms between the audience reaction to a joke and that same audience reaction to the truth.

That kind of presentation asks some good questions. Why should the joke upset you more than the truth? Could it be you don't actually care about 'thing' but just object to people talking about it in less than reverent tones? How does that help anyone, particularly people associated with 'thing' we're all clutching our pearls over?

Depends on the situation.

A joke in some situations can be just an insult in others.

knowledge of a subject doesn't necessarily mean they're telling the truth. we see people use extreme examples to make general points all the time, lol. people use anecdotal evidence to make jokes all the time, and we laugh.

but truth is truth, if we're going to factor it in. I believe in facts over feelings, but a malicious insult and telling the truth through a joke aren't really the same, lol

I got yikes'd for a joke a wrote out on here, despite every single black person I have ever told it to in person finding it hilarious. Granted I preface that joke by telling them I drop the n-bomb in it and I make sure that they are ok with me saying it. One time a guy said that the joke had better be funny if I use the n-bomb in it, he was satisfied with its use. If they have a problem with me using the n-bomb I dont tell the joke.
