People going to back to working towards their goals instead of doing something incredibly foolish like taking on debt?

Yea, unfortunately not the norm anymore...

Anyway, the kid will have a good future by building his work ethic and financial intellect.

I'd be worried though that some pieces of crap will steal his lawnmower or something like that.

Give me a break.

Again, no one is saying he can't have a summer job. my issue with this is that he knows that at 12 years old he needs to start saving for college now because he doesn't want to burden his parents who can't afford it....that's fucked. It shouldn't be that difficult to get an education. This country needs education reform bad.

The "free college is a handout!" """argument""" is and always has been a dumbass argument employed by peanutheads because it implies that it's a material thing that is given like an action figure is given to a child. It's an opportunity. You still have to work hard and study to pass your classes, they don't just send you a degree in the mail after 7-10 days of receiving payment, lol. Now, if they did do that then it could be called a handout accurately.

If he doesn't want to mow lawns (or do any other jobs), he can join the military.
Free tuition + living allowance + book stipend, has something valuable on his resume to tout for future job seeking + benefits being a veteran, and you can "enjoy your childhood" before you ship out at 17/18 whatever it is.

Also, apparently Vipa isn't aware that if the kid is poor enough, and would be the first child to go to college (or if he's not, has somehow achieves Independent status on his taxes), he can sign up for the Pell Grant that pays for basically almost all of his tuition. And his the kid is black, he can just apply for a black-centric scholarship.
So he doesn't actually have to join the military to get free college by virtue of his race/class!

But if filling out a couple forms (and an essay if the scholarship requires one) is still too much of a hassle to do, then I'm sorry, he probably isn't cut out for college.

i'm fully aware of what he can do. i paid for college myself, but i didn't get any grants....my parents made too much to qualify me for those grants, but not enough to be able to afford to help me out (which was fine, i managed)....That entire system is flawed.

If this young man charges $20 yard, if he cuts an average of 10 yards a week every week of the year (unlikely), he goes to an average community college for 2 years and an average 4-year college the other two years, he'll have to cut grass for OVER TEN YEARS

200*52*10=104,000

This person thinks that you need to spend 104k for 2 years of community college and 2 years at a 4 year college. No wonder they think it's impossible to work your way through school.

It'd still likely be at least $50k for that in today's money. By the time he's 18 it'll be a lot more after inflation and the rising cost of college so it's really not that far-fetched. But again that's assuming he mows 10 lawns a week every week which is rather unlikely

ten lawns a week, every week, with zero maintenance costs on the lawnmower (so no gas costs, repair costs, etc.)

So 10 lawns a week....When is he going to find time to mow 10 lawns a week? lets say he does 2 a day, that's 5 days of mowing lawns. He spends a good portion of his weekend doing that....then what? Mow lawns after school during the week? in addition to his homework...Where is his time to be a kid in this equation?

Just wondering what you think he should be doing.
Does the article state what he would have been doing instead? Playing mobile games or watching youtube videos on a tablet instead? Playing basketball? Idly wandering around a mall?

Mowing lawns is a perfectly valid "kid experience" (at least in the "old" days before kids had their eyes glued to digital screens). Hell, it gives him something to tell to HIS kids (if he has any)

"hostility and aggressiveness" is a pretty vague way of wording that. at what point do you call it "hostility and aggressiveness"? I personally think it can sometimes be pretty hard to tell on a message board with only text.

and who do you think is more childish: the people who get mad at people who propagate injustice? or the people who propagate the injustice in the first place?

That is the saddest thing I have ever heard

A 12 year old should have fun during the last few fun child years of summer he has leave the hard work for adults its not 1789 anymore we don't child labor.

Also the amount of work he is putting in for the the pay he is making is trash he is just wasting his summer and the parents should be ashamed.

Also this further proves that College tuition is disgraceful everyone wants education but kids have to slave away to start making money so they arent in debt for the next 20 years of their lives :(
