That's not how history at the PhD level works, to my understanding. History, as an academic study, tends to be inductive reasoning given historical evidence. There tends to not be "the history of" but "the histories of" with many different historians intepreting evidence to tell different stories.

PhD programs are almost exclusively fully funded, no tuition and given a salary. Though, idk if this is the case in the humanitites.
