I think that's the disconnect audiences are having with it. It's cool, it has its moments, but there's so many moments where a monster pops out and it just doesn't look scary. It's like something that could be in Goosebumps. It's obviously CG and not a realistic type of CG like you would see in Game of Thrones.
I really loved the false start though. There's a hidden advertisement for Birds of Prey at the start! It's worth going just for that. Harley swings her hammer and says she's sick of clowns. ... Copied to Clipboard!

The CGI was really bad at times.

Yeah it got a bit silly. I think these movies sort of went for a silly haunted house attraction kind of feel at times but it's not very scary.

Yeah there were very few scenes that were actually tense or frightening. I think it's also because they tried to mix comedy into many of the scenes. A bunch of the comedy landed though so I think it was worth it.

This would be my main gripe with the movie, or possibly even my only gripe? Since for the most part I found it entertaining and well acted.
Very different tone than the first movie. Describing it as something that could be in Goosebumps is pretty perfect. Felt straight up cartoony at times. --- "We know things can move faster than the speed of light because liberal tears are on the ground before something offensive even happens" - Coffeebeanz ...
