Been years since I played, but yeah you can take both paths unless I'm remembering totally wrong.

Oh, and one of the gems is in the ceiling when you first meet Salazaar. Hard to miss, easy to walk past. You have to shoot it down.

Always invest in a treasure map. Also, after the Ashley chapter, you can use her to enter a previous room that has a .44 magnum, very powerful.

The castle is a great descent into cheesy bullshit, especially considering how atmospheric the village started out.
