Basically, I see a lot of "formula for success" youtubers more than people who believe in their craft. It makes me sad.

I personally hate it when people who make entertainment I enjoy manage to make a living off of their creations and can continue making that content. They should really respect me as a whiny piece of shit and not try make any money off of things that they create for me to consume.

Is there really data out there?

Yeah, here's an article of one channel discussing it. It's called a "call to action" and it works on the average viewer. I couldn't find a study on it or anything, but I've seen plenty of channels talk about it. YouTube metrics are complex and finicky if you dig into them.

Jim Sterling also mentioned in one of his recent videos that his (satirical) call for viewers to like and subscribe in a previous video resulted in a non-trivial uptick in both of those numbers.

I get it; hearing the spiel is annoying, but I get why YouTubers do it. It's like complaining that the cashier at GameStop tries to get you to preorder stuff. That's just how the game works.

Very, very rarely do I ever subscribe to a person that tells me to subscribe. If I like you, I subscribe. Simple.
