Squall - Squall grew up as an orphan in an orphanage with other orphans. He obsessively latched on to an older female orphan named Ellone. Ellone was extremely sought over by people for her powers so she was taken away by White SeeD to protect her. She was taken without saying goodbye to Squall so Squall became a bitch beta cuck and learned to not depend on anyone by himself because of this. Despite having other orphans around him and having a loving caretaker in Edea, he still became the asshole loner that you know and some how love. He eventually joined SeeD, used GFs and lost a ton of his childhood memories. That's it.

Cloud - Cloud grew up fatherless, raised by his mom only. As a kid, he wanted to be normal, hang out with the other kids but for some reason they didn't give a shit about. It was implied being fatherless was made everyone ignore him. Anyway, he really liked Tifa but like the other kids, she gave no fucks about him. One day Tifa's mom died and she went off to climb Nibelheim mountain. The other kids and Cloud followed her. The other kids eventually got scared and ran back into the town while she went deeper into the mountains, only Cloud still following her. They get to a bridge and it broke down and they both fell. Tifa almost got killed and got heavily injured while Cloud barely got scratched. Tifa's father and the rest of the village blames Cloud and hates him even more than ever. This turns Cloud into something of an edgelord but he knew it was still dumb of him to act this way. He hears about Sephiroth and his feats. To impress his town, verify his own worth and earn Tifa's attention, he plans to join Shinra Solider and become a hero like Sephiroth. He calls Tifa to the well that night to tell her, and for some reason all of a sudden out of the blue, after not giving fucks about him for years and years, she shows affection towards Cloud. He sets off for Shinra but fails to join Solider. He was tasked with Zack and Sephiroth to investigate the Mako Reactor in his hometown but was ashamed and embarrassed of his rank so he hid his identity. Sephiroth learns he's a monster and accepts it and then destroys Cloud's hometown killing everyone he has ever known and loved including Cloud's mother. Cloud was able to defeat Sephiroth and save Tifa. He was captured, tested with Mako and Jenova cells and became comatose. Zack saves Cloud but was caught by Shinra and killed while protecting Cloud. Cloud then gets a combination of Zack's memories mixed with his along with getting some amnesia but even worst unknowingly to him he's also mind controlled and manipulated by Jenova and Sephiroth via having Jenova cells injected to him. Almost 3/4 of the game Cloud is highly unsure of who he is. That's it.
