And applying pressure to their chest, how does that simulate an actual heartbeat?

How does it work? Not very well. TV makes it seem like the success rate is really high. It isn't. You want those paddled during a cardiac situation.

You are pumping their heart (with a lot of force. normally enough to break the sternum) to move blood to keep the brain oxygenated. As far as I know CPR doesn't teach the breathing aspect anymore.

More and more they're teaching you that the compressions are a lot more effective than mouth to mouth, they still teach that part, but the focus is heavily on the compressions. It doesn't simulate a heartbeat, you're actually supposed to be pressing on the heart to try and restart blood flow. The truth is tho that CPR is rarely effective, it may buy someone time but actually resuscitating someone is a movie thing.

When I got qualified last year they did teach the breathing aspect, but they emphasize that it's nowhere near as important as the chest compresses.

The percent of CO2 in an exhalation is 5%. It's still mostly oxygen.

Mouth to mouth seems like a thing of the past now. It usually starts with a pocket mask as youre preforming chest compressions. Then of course, theres more advanced tools such as AED, OPA/NPA (NPA rarely used), BVM, etc.

It's mostly for pumping the still oxygenated blood through the body. CPR isn't for breathing for someone.

As someone CPR/First Aid certified since 2005, the success rate is like 17% IIRC. That my seem discouraging but it's not. Someone in need of CPR is clinically dead, so it's not like you're making the situation worse by trying it.

I believe the new way of cpr doesn't require that. Just quick pumps to the chest
