I don't think there are places open to take it today or tomorrow due to the holiday. She pulled it out from under this tree next to my house. She was just tearing at it and I finally got her to drop it and take her away.

I think his two back legs are broken but he's conscious and able to move around besides that. I threw some peanuts in the box but he's not going for them.

He's winding down a lot now, not moving much. There wasn't any blood though so I don't think he's just dying outright. Seems to be at peace in the box. He was moving around a lot at first and trying to run away from me but his back legs just didn't work so he wasn't getting anywhere.

It's probably just prolonged suffering at this point. Could be bleeding internally. A shelter might do surgery but it's pretty expensive. They'll probably euthanize it.

It's not crying or anything anymore. Doesn't look to be in suffering. I think she just had him by the back legs.

Shouldve let your dog finish him, tbh. Would've been the best option to minimize suffering and your dog gets fed

At the very least he get its out of his system.

Although I suppose he could develop a taste for killing.

It could be a number of things. You could take it to an animal hospital but those are usually for cats/dogs. Vets don't typically do wildlife and if they do, it'll cost a lot.

Hopefully a shelter can assess/help it better. Not much you can really do. Shelters should be open.

How do I find that out? The shelter I know of is closed. And my dad claims they wouldn't even take it because it's a rodent.

I wouldn't let the dog have it, 'cuz squirrels have a lot of shit they can carry (rabies, plague, Lyme disease, etc.). I would consider putting the squirrel down though.

Even if it's hard for you to do, you need to mercy kill it. It's probably suffering and isn't gonna get better.

I don't even know how I'd do that. Anyway it's just fading away like a dying person, doesn't seem to be "suffering" at all.

Is the box in a warm spot? If anything providing heat would be one less thing the squirrel's body needs to do.

Also if you have an eye dropper see if it will take some sugar water - my parents did that with a fledgling bird they found outside. A small syringe with a plastic tube would work too, as long as both are clean.

It's in my garage, pretty warm... I wonder if I can find an eye drop.

If you have a reading lamp, you could put it over the box (careful not to let it fall or the bulb touch the cardboard). CVS or most any drugstore should have eyedroppers too.

If you are really worried, just post on social media. Depending on where you live, there is probably a rescue person around. Cute, injured squirrel in need of help would quickly go viral.

And those rescue people are the types to drop everything to come help an animal in need.

You're just prolonging a slow death. It's the proper thing to kill it and end it's suffering.

I say that as someone who loves animals.

You can call emergency vets and ask if they'll take it in.

There are "lots of sanctuaries out there" but not too many 24 hour ones unless you're driving all over the US to find one person who will take it.

i don't think CE would be up for that. i have seen videos where they put a deer out of it's misery when it's broken it's legs.

As soon as you can, find a wildlife rescue (not a shelter) in your area. They'll know what to do for it.
