Managing two separate characters at once is just as much of a hassle as it sounds.

But the low frame rate makes it just that much harder to manage.

I really want to like this game, but the combat really is not great.

The story is initially kind of interesting (the idea that your nemesis has somehow been harnessed to help you fight off other members of the same species) but it definitely doesn't go anywhere with it.

How far are you? Combat gets much better at case 3. The main gripe I have is the camera and lock on system doesn't seem to be made for multiple enemies in a close encounter.

Game kinda looks and feels like if someone made Xenosaga and replaced the RPG combat system.

I haven't played much of Astral Chain yet but you can play through a Platinum Games title several times and still not fully wrap your head around the combat.

Dunno why you're having issues with the combat after case 3. The worst part is the camera, if you can get over that the combat is smooth as hell. Unlock more abilities, unlock the perfect call ability for all of your legions for easier parrying. There's a rhythm to the combat. You dont really need to focus on controlling your legion, you should be reacting to the combo system instead with the exception of their specials and trapping enemies if you choose to play that way.

The best Platinum Games seem hard and difficult to start off with. That's what makes it rewarding when you learn how to make the game your bitch. Even in Bayonetta I'd gather most people started off being bombarded with Stone awards.

I wouldnt even say the combat is very complicated. At first it's not very fleshed out and you feel like you're playing wrong. Which I think was a dumb design choice because once you get the tut in case 3 for the combos the game really opens up, and there was really no reason to not start with all of that in at least case 2 with that available.

I actually had to increase the difficulty to max after the first stage.

It's not hard, it's just strange and overly complicated.

The "max" you're at is basically default. Hard mode doesnt come in until you beat a level. They start you off on easy mode for some reason.
