He responded and says his team might need someone in a few weeks and wants me to keep in touch. Gave me his email address to follow up with.

Networking is a thing my friends. If you ever see a job posting you like or theres a particular company you want to join, try to find the hiring manager on LinkedIn and connect with them. Send them your resume directly. Avoid it getting sucked into a black hole. They may not respond (I messaged a couple of others who did not), but you have nothing to lose in trying.

Whatever you do, dont message and ask them to review your resume and ask if there is a fit for anything. Dont be vague. Pick a specific job, explain how youre a fit and then attach your resume.

In my industry its personal recommendations or nothing most of the time. So LinkedIn is fairly useless. Ill check it every couple of weeks to see if I have new friend requests.

Going directly is definitely the best way to go from what I've seen.

I went to a job fair, thought it was pointless before going in since there was really only one opening I could do (that was over 30+ days old from what Indeed says) which might conflict with school, but I guess I made a good enough impression to the head manager that they fast tracked me through like two weeks later.

Well, it's either that or they just had a shortage and someone cancelled/accepted another offer and had to settle with me... but whatever!

Yes. Im fucking awesome at my job.

Pretty much. Its a good company but the role is not for me. This is more of an entry level kind of role. Im not into the churn and burn environments that just try to make sales by getting more bodies in the door. The amount of stress its causing me for the same pay as before is not worth it. I know for a fact that this company pays better and has a better environment. They also allow for remote workers

I mean Im not desperate and not going to apply to just anything. But if I see something I think is worth it, Ill go for it.

LinkedIn does have a feature to write recommendations. Youre supposed to ask people to write some but Im terrible at that. I dont have any. But I know my clients would write good ones if I asked

Thats fantastic Cleo. I've gotten my last two jobs from LinkedIn by recruiters reaching out to me. It's not exactly networking but it's something.

Most job fairs are a joke. "Dress to impress. Bring your resume! Such companies as 7-11, Wendy's, and your local grocery store." A bunch of minimum wage jobs.

Yeah job fairs are depressing af.

I went to one after I was laid off from my last job and realized that I'll never go back to another one ever again.

As for networking... I can see how linked in could be useful, but I just use a combination of ziprecruiter, glassdoor, and indeed.com and I'm never hurting for jobs. Just takes putting yourself out there.

What sort of messages do you send hiring managers? Along the lines of "this is me, here is my resume, do you have any positions available?"

Nice! I did flag myself as open on LinkedIn. So Ill see if I get anything interesting. And a friend of mine from my last job gave me a call today. Shes sending my resume to two people she knows are looking. One of them I dont find exciting, but the other I definitely do. Shes job hunting too (things got extra bad at my last company from what I hear).

Believe what you want. I made a really good case for myself in my message. I sent it to two other male managers who did not respond to me.

Thanks! Yeah I know what I want and would rather not waste anyones time. But I need to be extra selective next time. I dont want a string of short term jobs. I want a place where I can grow.

Ive used those too and got good responses. This was one of the few companies that never reached out to me after I applied a few months back. So I figured Id try the direct route.

I basically thanked him for connecting with me and said that the company is one Ive always looked up to. I wrote a short paragraph of what I do and highlighted a couple of accomplishments. I said that if they ever needed additional members on the team, Id really appreciate if they could consider me. Then attached my resume.

Feel free to PM me your profile if you would like to add me. I don't have 4k connections on there but about half of my whopping 75 connections are IT recruiters on the East coast. Maybe they handle IT sales stuff as well and will reach out to you for a remote opportunity. *shrug*

I'm sorry your exp wasnt very good but not all job fairs are that terrible. If you live near a military base most I'm aware of have job fairs every week(Friday 7:00am-noon).

Ignoring the collage ads most were well paying careers such as police officer, border patrol, or oil/gas and trade schools such as welding, trucking, or contruction.

Well, the job fair I was going to was in a hospital, so mostly just hospital centered jobs which of course there is a variety. It was basically just sign in, wait, and you pretty much talk to the head honcho of whatever department you're looking for.
