I mean if Megadeth of Iron Maiden or I dunno, Primus put out another album, it'd be no big deal. Just another album by an ageing out of date rock band.

That's what this Tool album sounds like to me. It's fine, but I don't know what people were expecting. Maybe Tool fans need to chill out.

my buddy described it as sounding like a Tool cover band putting out a tribute album, pretty spot on imo

Yeah that's exactly it. It sounds like a bunch of B-sides from Lateralus.

It's just a weird time for music imo.

Like I tried listening to the latest RHCP albums, not that great. KMFDM? Alright. Emigrate? It feels like a huge step back from their first two albums. Rammstein? Had some good songs on it but there were some duds that just ruined the flow of the album.

I'm personally fine with that, as Lateralus is my favorite thing they ever did.

I mean if you exclusively listen to bands that peaked in the 90s of course youll think music is in a bad place right now

Those bands have consistently put out good music until recently.

Rammstein and KMFDM did not peak in the 90s.

but yea my bro is a huge tool fan and he's loving the new album

imo Metallica is a shining example of group living up to their heyday with a new album

Dude, that's getting kind of tired and I really don--SIKE.

When youre listening to Tool, just remember that theyre not like other bands. Their music is incredibly artistic, almost to the point where you have to be paying complete attention to them to even remotely understand them. I remember listening to a song on Lateralus (though I cant remember what it was), where I thought a song was absolute bollocks during the listen. Then, I closed my eyes for a second, and all of a sudden the song had an entirely new meaning. It was insane the way Tool could just become something so different when you take a look into the music.

Another thing you should note about Tool is that its easy to get a headache listening to them. Not because theyre a bad band, but because of how many ideas their music is riddled with and how complex they are. Soon enough your head will fill to the brim and the rest will just sound like noise to you. Just turn it off and give it a listen the next day.

If you dont like the music, youll definitely at least enjoy reading through the lyrics, and picking apart the song itself and all of the artistic values that go into making it the complexity that it is.

I love the new album, but I'm also a big fan of prog in general. If you're a listener that wanted songs like "Sober" or "The Pot" then I can see why you would be disappointed with it.

I'm glad there's nothing like "The Pot" on this as it's easily one of my least favorite Tool songs.

I think The Pot was my fave when I first listened through 10K Days. Been quite awhile since I heard it, though. I remember back in the day, when I would play music while I sleep (I still do, but I used to, too /hedberg), Viginti Tres' weird noises woke up my roommate.

Anyway, gonna listen to the new album now. Hope it's not trash!

This is probably the first Tool album where I feel like Maynard is the least significant player. Most of my favorite moments come when he shuts up.

It's got a few good songs. I read someone saying how TOOL songs have to be listened to CLOSELY to truly grasp the beauty of it...

No. The TOOL of the past made damn good music that anyone could hear and appreciate at face value. This album is just OK and the real TOOL fans are coming out of the woodwork with excuses.

The new album has a few good songs on it as you said. No great like their past material. The issue is Maynard can't yell or scream anymore like he used to so it sounds like he's phoning it in on the vocals. Some of the instrumentals while amazing, sound like rehashes of their old music too which isn't like Tool to do.

Usually from bands I hear I either can't get into the singer or it sounds electronic like it was made with autotune and a pc.
