Like the shit I'm reading largely from American audiences on reddit and so on.

"Chinese shills and corrupt law enforcement entrenching on human rights is a good story" and it's where this all started, but it's pretty simplistic to look at what's happening at this point as just good guys vs bad guys.

I have friends in Hong Kong scared for their lives - not of the police, but of protestors. People beating the shit out of random civilians, looting random shops.

I don't even have an answer for what should happen, but the idea that all these protestors are doing is bravely standing against tyranny seems totally childish to me. A lot of them are just thugs looking for a reason to cut loose.

I think it's important to acknowledge brutality for what it is even if you think ultimately one side is way more wrong and must be fought against. That's not "both sides" nonsense, that's just being honest about what's actually happening.

Like I said, my friends who live in Hong Kong aren't scared for their property, they're scared for their lives.

As long as you aren't a pro-CCP supporter, you have no need to fear for your life from protestors. The random civilians getting attacked a lot of the time are getting attacked by Pro-government supporters or literal gangsters paid to attack people for the sake of making the protestors look bad.

What percentage of protestors during the Civil Rights Movement or Women's Suffrage Movement would you peg as "just thugs looking for a reason to cut loose"? More or less than the current protests in Hong Kong or less and why?

you would really hard pressed to find a protest, especially one as broad scaled and longrunning as this one, which doesn't have opportunistic dangerous people using it to their advantage. I don't see how that's shocking or surprising. It certainly doesn't cheapen the central cause
