The original 60's Spider-Man comics were basically an angsty, melodramatic soap opera for kids. Is that all that Spider-Man is? No, of course not. But it's clear that the Raimi films were leaning into that angle for their world and for that world, I think Tobey killed it.

It's the same way Burton leaned really hard into the 1930's pulp energy for his Batman movie. Is it representative of Batman today? No. But it is representative of a major facet of the character, and the movie executed that vision wonderfully.

Not every superhero movie needs to be a perfect 1:1 representation of the character and world as you read off the rack last week. Most of these popular characters today are pushing between 60 and 70 years old, and have been in thousands of of different stories and have evolved drastically in different ways. There will never be a single actor that perfectly encapsulates any major comic book character. >_>

There really isn't a more perfect actor for the role. He has the right build, look, I think even his height matches Parker's canonical height.

He's the first Spiderman I knew. Worked for me at the time. Seeing Tom Holland though, I wish Tobey's Spiderman was funnier.

Actually if ce is any indication he's overrated

CE isn't really an indication of anything in the real world. If it was, Captain Marvel would have failed at the box office, Hillary Clinton would be President, and nobody in America would tip at restaurants. >_>

He was fuck-awful as Spidey.

I only saw TAS1, but Garfield was better in every way except his voice.

He was an awesome Peter, but didn't convince as Spidey. Gimme someone who's Peter is like Toby's, and his Spidey is Garfield and we got the perfect casting.

Tobey was great because he was the first major motion picture live action Spider-man. Those of us who had always wanted to see a live action Spider-man movie, Tobey was good enough even through all the flaws of his version of the character, because we were so excited to see the character in live action.

Personally I grew up with Spider-man TAS. That was my biggest (not only, but biggest) exposure to Spider-man until the movie came out. So when the movie came out, I knew that there were things about Tobey's Spider-man that weren't as good in my mind as the TAS version. His humor/quips being one of them.

Now that I can look back on the Raimi Spider-man films, they hold a special place in my heart. But I'm no longer as blinded by the heart fluttering feeling of seeing Spider-man in film, so I can be harder on the flaws than I would have been back then. Seeing Holland now, which isn't a perfect Spider-man, is awesome because some of the things Maguire missed, Holland nails.

Tbh Spectacular Spider-Man had the best version of Spider-Man.

I would honestly rather have had more seasons of that show than any of the movies I have seen. I haven't seen Far From Home yet though.

I don't think he was the best Spider-man.

But those films have certainly been the best.

Have you watched them lately?

I remembered them being worse until I rewatched them a few months ago.

They are really great, they know exactly how goofy they are and run with it, while at the same time not winking at the camera.

He's way overrated these days. People treat him like he was the perfect Spider-man now. He never was. He was always too quite. Spidermqn should always be talking. That's a key feature of the character. In the comics when he doesn't constantly talk you know something is wrong.

All three live action movie Spidermen have their problems but Tobey always felt the least like Spider-Man in costume.

I watched all three back to back last summer and I thought they were garbage. 1 was the least bad, 2 is the most overrated superhero movie ever, and 3 is just trash
