With overtime, I net about $1000 more every 2 weeks on the lowest payscale. But that's 60 hours a week or 120 hours for 2 weeks in a blue collar job. I haven't maxed out my salary yet, but the people who have and are doing overtime are grossing over $150K+ annually. But these guys are baby boomers and their body looks all fucked up when they're simply walking. So I'm thinking, is it worth netting $24K more a year by working my body to death if I want to retire in 30 years? Probably not.

My body is already kinda fucked up and I've only been here for 4 years.

I don't do OT unless I'm forced for one reason or another. I live within my means and I enjoy my free time a little bit too much.

One of my friends constantly does overtime at his job. He makes good money doing it; he bought a newish car in cash recently and he can buy whatever he wants within reason. He's always tired though, never hangs out with us, and barely plays games anymore. So... eh. It's a mixed bag.

Also afaik, while you do net a bit more money, wouldn't that mean you also get taxed at a higher bracket? You'll pay more in social security... medicare.... state and federal taxes... how is that supposed to benefit the worker?

That was pretty much me back then. But I was always tired and only had a few hours of free time every night but that goes into eating, showering, cooking, etc. By then it was already bedtime and the only quick entertainment I had was just watching YouTube vids or deeding before sleeping and the days repeats again.

Except that's how taxes work. I can compare an old tax from the years I worked 60-80 hours a week and the recent taxes where I only did 40 hours a week and can clearly see you just get taxed more in every category.

So how does that benefit the worker? All I see is that we're benefiting those who aren't working.

Maybe you just see more on your return then

you only get taxed a percentage of what you make for the year, and you only get taxed the percent within that bracket

lets say the tax brackets were

0-20,000 - 5%
20,001 - 50,000 - 15%
50,001 - 100,00 - 25%

If you made 75,000, you would only pay

5% tax on the first 20,000
15% on the 30,000 between 20,000 and 50,000
25% on the remaining 25,000

there is never a time where making more money is not beneficial to you

I'd say the same about working in general.

As long as you're high, fed and happy, what more do you need?

What goldeneel said. Don't be one of those people who refuse a raise because it moves them into a new tax bracket.

If you're looking at your paycheck, it might look like you're getting overly taxed, and I believe it's because some companies tax overtime at a flat rate that's probably higher than what your real tax rate is.
In the end, it gets "solved" through tax refunds

It really isn't worth it because you may be working at a place that will just cut your hours for the next pay period if you get overtime.

Horse shit

I only got a refund of $2100 on my tax return and I worked my body to death for those 3 years putting in 6 days 70 80 hour work weeks for YEARS. That's probably why my body isn't correct right now just like the old people at my work.

Which is why I switched to only doing 40 hours a week and investing my other time into other things that can make me more money but having full control of my time outside of my main job.

I mean, goldeneel explained how tax brackets work. You can do the math yourself by looking at your W-2

The Feds are taking more cents out of every dollar so instead of a typical 75cents per $1 you'll get maybe 60 cents. In other words, as the hours rise you are making less compared to prior working hours while putting more strain on your body. Still though, more money is more money.

It's better to work more jobs than to work OT.

Obviously if you don't want to work more than one job but still want money, you do OT or do something else in your spare time.

I didn't say it wasn't beneficial. It was more of deciding whether or not it was worth working more overtime for a bit more money in exchange for more of your time and health.

For me, I'm doing alright and can pay all of my bills by simply working 40 hours in 2 weeks and invest the rest. Sure I can do the overtime, but I have to consider this job long term and that means surviving. The only way to do that is to not constantly working my body to death like I did in the past 3 years otherwise I'd be dead before I even hit my 40s.

If you need the money and $24,000 is something that you literally need it is you need, then yeah it will be very beneficial and you need to so overtime.

But I'm not at that point and God forbid I'll ever be, which is why I'm investing the rest of my money so I can retire earlier and maybe throw some more into my emergency fund.
