Because it fixes a game that is so good on paper (amazing concept, setting, music, progression, etc.) but there is also so much wrong with it. The gameplay is not fun, moving around is tedious, you have to farm for items to win the game, dying basically puts you back at square one, the bosses other than Mother Brain are not intimidating at all, etc.

Metroid Zero Mission fixes all of that and gave us the A+ game that Metroid should have been instead of the C- game that NES Metroid is.

Nintendo really needs to release a GBA classic but it plays the games on the TV and has a SNES controller.

Yeah, Zero Mission is a fantastic game, even if the Ridley fight doesn't live up to its fantastic wind-up.
You enter the obvious boss room, but nothing is in it. You exit through the far door, collect an item that's incompatible with your suit, and re-enter the obvious boss room, only for the door to lock behind you. You cross the chamber again, get up to the door, and Ridley swoops out of nowhere via cut-scene. Epic. A shame he's such a chump in the actual fight though...

It's certainly up there (with REmake).

I really hate the stealth section that was added. That part doesn't really fit in and just kills the flow of the game.

I actually think AM2R (remake of the Gameboy game) is a much better remake.

However, my choice for best-ever remake is Bionic Commando Rearmed.

That's really good too. I don't mind ZM's stealth section though.

I'd still go with ZM either way, since the structure of 2 wasn't great to begin with (with the lava gating things off, which is antithetical to the Metroid formula). That's not really a problem with the remake though to be fair.

Pokemon HG/SS is another notable remake of course, but like AM2R, there are aspects of the original that irk me that are carried over.

I prefer the original. Warts and all, it was its own thing. Zero Mission is just Super Metroid Jr.

With Pokemon HGSS, the originals are not bad at all, in fact they are quite good games at least for Pokemon games.

I don't think Zero Mission went above and beyond what a remake should do, it's more like NES Metroid is the greatest example of a game that needed a remake tbh. But don't get me wrong, Zero Mission is fantastic in its own right.

It's in my top 3 greatest remakes of all time. The other two being REmake and Tomb Raider: Anniversary.
