imo the entire FF7 'series' other than the original FF7 is kind of goofy given that the implications of the ending are pretty clear to me, and contrast with what is said to have happened.

Agreed. Much prefer the ending's suggestion that humanity is wiped out to save the planet. That was a logical end to a game that had been about eco-terrorism.
