It used to be more or less everyone on there. And then she suggested that is unprofessional or something.

Now it has the heading "Directors" and includes the members of the board...and her. Also, her picture is bigger than any of the Directors.

Assistant...to the Director?

Sounds like she's gunning for a new job and making herself appear more important than she really is.

I can't say the word on this message board but I like to refer to her as [brain challenged] Cersei Lannister. She started in this company as a low level HR manager before I got here. Somehow she talked herself into the General Manager role, and her first move was to flatten out the company hierarchy and remove all departmental management so that she is literally the only link between the actual staff and the board. She sits in on board meetings to report what goes on in the office.

This puts her in a pretty unique position of power because our board has literally no fucking idea what happens day to day. They turn up for a board meeting like once a month and that's it.

The hilarious part is that this is an IT company and she couldn't troubleshoot a dead battery in her mouse. Our board of directors think the sun shines out of her ass too.

I need to get out of here.

Who hasn't had a manager like this?

To be fair, you can always just send an (anonymous) email to the board of directors, explaining your many grievances with her. It might work; it might not. But you're not taking a risk, because it's anonymous. Managers like that need to be challenged head-on.

Tbh that might be what your board wants. If they only go to meetings once a month they probably outright dont give a shit about much she has to bring to the table. If things are running smoothly which is probably all she reports then they think she's doing a great job. She's the very definition of middle management in most companies.

I think you are right. It makes me cringe though, because she really thinks she's one of the directors. I have no doubt she tells her friends she sits on the board of a company.

She is the kind that has a rich husband and likes to name drop about the car he drives or the bottle of wine she had. Totally obnoxious.

The board is full of morons if they allowed this to happen. They've effectively put them selves into a "key man risk" situation. What happens if she gets sick and has to take extended leave? What if she quits? What if she gets hit by a car and is now in pieces on the road?

Update your resume immediately and get outta dodge. I've seen this before and it only goes badly.

You are correct, but the even funnier thing is that I've played out this scenario in my head and realised that literally nothing of consequence would change. Nothing at all.

She provides no key skils to this company. She has no technical knowledge, and no clout to direct company strategy. As best I can work out she's pretty much a glorified PA. One of our techs discovered she spends the most time on facebook by a huge margin. She also takes the most "other leave" days off.

She is the kind of person that calls people into a meeting to discuss something, and then the entire conversation goes over her head, so she makes sure to get in her two cents anyway which ends up clouding the issue.

I've worked out that the way she adds value is by making sure only she knows the secrets of certain situations. So there might be a problem there, but nothing that couldn't be resolved in a day. She is a spanner in the machine for most situations, not a cog in it.

The times she's been off have been the most productive and peaceful here.

I know exactly the person you're describing. The thing is, they mostly exist in small private companies or startups where things can be a bit more of the wild west. It's crazy to think that a public company allowed this to happen.
