Remember - a lot of businesses go to China for low cost labor then import into America.

With the trade war, companies won't be making these giant profits anymore because they're paying a shit load of money in tariffs.

Then companies may come back to America or find alternatives that strengthen America's economy while China's economy continues to go down the drain. Trump can drag this out as long as he needs to - the negative effect on America is negligible and China is suffering badly.

This is a perfect example - so China loses business, their economy is crashing, and companies still find ways to make stuff cheaply and import into USA with no tariffs.

The average Chinese citizen is also hurt much harder than a United States citizen because of how wealthy the USA is.
