I have The Official Nintendo Player's Guide from 1987 though I don't remember where I purchased it. (It was probably a flea market.)

It's funny to think they had 90 games by the time this guide was published considering the NES lifespan would eventually see somewhere around 600 licensed games released in the US. They must've really boomed in the late 1980s before declining rapidly in the early 1990s.

The guide itself is an interesting novelty. It's basically what Nintendo Power would be a year or two later, but with more games covered extensively.

I used to read that thing all the time as a kid. Those Metroid and Goonies II maps helped out a lot.

I think around 87 the console and games didn't really have solid release dates yet. They just sorta came out when the stores got them.

Hell the NES was still marketed as a toy when it released because of how toxic games were seen.

I wonder when they started to figure out that this was different.

Ah, I'd stopped reading by then.

Speaking of toys, Rob the Robot is featured on the inside cover of the guide despite it being about two years since his two games came out.

One thing I find interesting is that the Mushroom Retainers from Super Mario Bros. are referred to by female pronouns. It's probably a typo or a miscommunication of some sort. I've never seen any information to suggest that they were female in the Japanese release or intended as such in the US release.

Also, apparently the boxers in Punch-Out have nicknames. Bald Bull's is Bald Bucking Bull.

"The Cross is the only weapon that can destroy Lucifer." ~ Player's Guide on Ghosts 'n Goblins

There's a line you wouldn't see in Nintendo related media again. If that game had come out any later, the shield sprite would've been edited to avoid religious symbolism and the final boss would have a different name.

The maps in that player's guide were awesome. I used it so much as a kid that I had to tape up the side after wearing out the binding.
