I think End had a pretty hopeful ending all things considered. If nothing else Shinji comes to terms with his continued existence.

I'm on ep 19. I'm enjoying the focus on the psychological side of piloting a giant being rather than the action and gore (though there's plenty of that). Also Pen Pen best character, Asuka worst.

Just finished the series and End of Evangelion. Not only pretty confusing but depressing, as you guys said. Can't believe they'd do Misato like that :(

Legend has it that the reason is because Gainax originally animated the last 2 episodes to be very much like the movie, but it was so violent that the censors outright rejected both episodes. Left with no money and no time left, and knowing it was impossible to edit-down the current episodes, they instead went for the "creative" low budget episodes we got.
