IIRC its the norm, but not mandatory like some other regional pizzas. You can get it with the cheese on top at certain places.

I can safely say that this is not the norm. Maybe at some sit downs they do that, but most places it is more cheese than sauce.

Detroit style pizza is mostly a delivery thing. Many places (large delivery chains) around here that originated in this region have the square deep dish as a staple of the menu. Buddys, Jets, Little Caesars, Dominoes, Cottage inn, ect. usually all do it the same way unless you request it differently.

The way i usually see it is, a thicker crust, small amount of sauce, good amount of cheese, then toppings.

I'm down as long as the sauce is either amazing or not that liberally applied. I love pizza with thick crust that is crunchy on the ends. The local pizza place I got as a kid did that it was always a fight amongst myself and my brothers to get the crust pieces. I remember having friends over and they were bewildered that we wanted the crusts like the center pieces were the prize. Heathens.

But my uncle use to bring us this square like pizza that was cut into strips.

No, she made it out of stale English muffins, ketchup, and store brand knock-off Kraft singles...

But back to the Detroit style pizza, it's solid. I'd put it a little behind Chicago and New York, but way ahead of St. Louis.

That particular pizza looks like shit but, in general, this just sounds like any deep dish pizza. I don't think Detroit gets to call dibs.

Well, since i'm a sauce lover, i'd say I need that in my stomach for my life to be complete.
