Wife's niece is turning 10 or something stupid. I mean, I don't want to go to any birthday parties, let alone one filled with shrieking kids.

The house is so quiet now. What to do?

Yes spending time with your step-niece on her birthday is clearly the worse way you can spend a day. I recommend going to a cemetery to see what awaits us all.

I understand. I don't get many days off. And like to treasure the ones I have. A kid's birthday party isn't usually the best. If it's was your own kid, that's one thing. But for your niece, it's a little different. Tbh, she might not care whether you're there unless you're like her favorite uncle, Then you have to go. But I feel she would be more excited about her friends (probably kids her age) and family her own age more... But it all depends. If only it wasn't your last day...

PotD loves being hostile for no reason whatsoever. I feel for you, TC. Life is already full of things you go do that you'd rather not. Don't feel bad for being selfish here.

Do you get to choose when you take your vacation? If so in the future id keep tabs on stuff like that coming up and take my vacation another time. I wouldnt mind with my niece but I actually dont mind hanging around my niece and have been a fairly constant part of her life save a year or so, so thats possibly different.

But yeah I understand where you are coming from most jobs you get like one vacation a year so it should be about you doing what you want aside from maybe actual necessities

I get 4 weeks vacation. Usually just use my days to take several long weekends throughout the year. This is the first proper vacation I've had in years, and we spent the week running around New Hampshire with our kids. I'd like just one day to relax and decompress before heading back to work tomorrow. Nothing against my niece. If it were next weekend I'd go, today I'm staying home.

I don't ;) took a short nap and a shower. Might read a book, might play a game. Gonna eat something first.
