All of those monetisation models have worked. They do work. Publishers no longer want them to work, because they want all of the money. They want to create some Chimera type facsimile of a business model that allows them to get the most money possible. They keep taking two steps forward, then one step back when the heat gets too much. As a result, we're now 10 to 15 Steps further than we were five years ago.

You're conflating "making a profit" with "Making the largest possible profit."

You don't need to "Combine subscriptions with DLC!" to make your game successful. You just need it to make the CEO happy.

You know it must be pretty frustrating at Respawn

- Create a new studio after a fallout with Activision and Call of Duty
- Create a new IP called Titanfall published by EA
- EA goes behind their back and strikes an exclusivity deal with Microsoft and they miss out on PS4 hype. This a big criticism as is a lack of single player mode
- Call of Duty takes a lot of ideas off Titanfall and is a massive hit
- Titanfall 2 is multiplat and has a great single player. It flops
- They get bought out by EA
- They ride the Battle Royale hype wave and release Apex Legends with a huge launch. Momentum fizzles out quickly and now this
- They announce a single player only Star Wars game with no microtransactions. The opposite of Battlefront 2. The game has a boring demo and no one seems to care

The problem is the CEO wants a ever larger pile of money, ergo they control many of the monetization decisions. At this rate, you might as well give the customer one of each option and let them pick.

The publisher has always been the problem, they're no better then Greedy Record Producers or Movie Studio Execs. They control the $$$. Dev studios has no chance to self publish and be a successful long running company on their own without Publisher controlling the purse. Too many dev studios are chasing the carrot of the Publisher and their purse strings. Ergo the endless greed for a larger pile of money and the pathetic state of gaming today.

Lots of gamers are asshats, and gaming developers deserve criticism. I played dark souls 3 and the community was full to the brim with shitty people. Whiners, trolls, baby ragers, whatever. Its a reflection on society and its not gonna change. People are just fucked up now and theres some that will complain or ruin anything they can.
