I've gotten into the habit of simply not apologizing (unless I feel like something was genuinely our fault) and just staring at them and watching them complain without saying a word. Eventually they realize it's a totally one-sided conversation and walk away.

He complained to the cashier that he should get a discount because his kids wanted the white Elite one and instead he ended up buying a blue regular controller. The only time I can remember bitching as a customer was when I canceled an ~$100/month service. The next month, I got an email from them confirming that my my order was shipped and I was being charged again despite having a confirmation from them that the service was stopped. I've never bitched out restaurant workers or retail workers before, but I feel totally justified in that case.
