reminder: this series of topics is meant to illustrate my rough upbringing, since whenever i mention it people on this board always dismiss it as "whining" or whatever or just don't believe me

so when i was younger, my sister had to get glasses. my parents literally cried for weeks after. they told me the following things about me getting glasses:

"you BETTER never have to get glasses"
"do you want to look like a nerd?"
"do you want to be as ugly as your sister?"
"you'll bring shame to this family"

so of course, i needed glasses by 6th grade since literally everyone in my family on both sides needed them (it was genetic)

i told my parents i couldn't see the board at school and they said screamed and started crying and saying the same thing again:

"you BETTER never have to get glasses"
"do you want to look like a nerd?"
"do you want to be as ugly as your sister?"
"you'll bring shame to this family"

they also made sure to blame me:
"why did you have to read so much?"
"why didn't you eat more carrots?"
"why did you watch the TV so close?"
"you'll never get married now"
"you are going to look so weak"
"you are costing me so much money to buy you glasses"

so i just never mentioned it again, and over the next 2 years my eye sight diminished incredibly. once my eyes got so bad literally everything was a blur without glasses the teacher called my parents into a conference and told them i needed glasses. they cried for weeks on end. after my vision was corrected at -500 i could finally see again. i was in 8th grade.

5 years ago my eyesight degraded to about -1000 and i got corrective eye surgery. but my eyesight still sucks because it had degraded so badly. i don't need glasses but the eyesight isn't "crisp"

Sorry TC, that's fucked up. Were your parents poor and just trying to get out of spending money? Regardless, they shouldn't have said those rotten things to you.

They were poor, but viewed having glasses as "low value" and didnt like the stigma of not being perfect

Sounds like they have self esteem issues. They should have been building up your self esteem instead of tearing it down.

The idea of having kids just so you can show them off and pretend their perfect to win against other family members is so sad.

I mean I see elements of it here and there in Indian culture too but thankfully my parents didnt care like that. If it was brought up it was only to me because they wanted better for me. They never used my accomplishments to gloat which was nice.
