According to a guide that I skimmed through, Leo seems to be a pretty good choice.

Claudio also seemed like a likely candidate. But I like to use girls in fighting games because they're cute.

I really like the aesthetics of Master Raven, but she's "medium" to learn according to the guide.

Lili is said to be easy. And she's mega hot. But according to the guide I glanced at, she doesn't have as much going for her as Leo or Claudio.

Xiaoyu is mega cute, but I'm struggling with her.

Paul Phoenix has simple and powerful combos.

If you've played fighitng games before, literally any of them.
The thing about Tekken is "to get gud" means: learn how the basics work.
It's nice to be able to hit a 8 move juggle but really you'll be learning how to move and poke first before you bother with anything more complicated than a 4 string

I have played a very small amount of Street Fighter IV and V.

Hyper Fighting as well when I was a kid, but I did nothing but button mash back then.

Paul and Jin are going to be the most straightforward characters. No weird bullshit gimmicks or silly movement animations. Just push some buttons to beat people in the face.

Of the girls, Nina and Anna are the main females of the series but I always found them kind of clunky. I'm a huge Asuka fan because she's the closest we're ever going to get to Jun ever again.

Tekken is pretty much about spacing and frame data for the beginning.
Frame data you can look up and generally there's a consensus of the best moves. These are usually useful in some way. Like for Xiaoyu, her b+1 doesn't use up a lot of frames for the animation:

The thing with Tekken is you need to realize when you see players doing juggles for around 6+ hits, those take time and time to learn and execute perfectly and sometimes they fail, you hit a button too soon, too late, etc.

Spacing and poking (also called footsies) are more or less the same category, not just about how far/close you are but what moves are good from what distance. So if someon whiffs a move that's unsafe, you should have an idea of what your options are. Basically, Bryan does f,f+2, you duck and have a few options. Same if you block his uf+4 or df+3, you need to have an idea of the person's character you're playing against and know the options but generally just look uip the best moves for the character on reddit or whatever forums and go from there.

Pretty much almost all the characters are viable just fine. Oh and stay away from the 10 hit combos, they're pointless. Xiaoyu is complicated but you don't need to learn all her tools at once. People play Lei without mastering all his stances since he arrived in Tekken 2 and they can still do fine. You don't need to master all of her stuff at the start. Just get used to some of her recommend moves that can punish and have good/safe frames and go from there.

In addition to what brutai said, it's extremely important to know the limits of your own character. You do not want to try to punish an unsafe move only to whiff because your attack didn't go far enough or hit high when you needed to hit mid or has an obnoxious wind up time with frames greater than the recovery of the unsafe move.

While that applies to basically every game it's much more important in Tekken because some punishes get you more follow up hits than others like if you can manage to punish with the opener to the 10 string.

Don't forget Akuma. Although he's less surprising than the two you mentioned, I suppose.

Gag characters seem to be a growing Trend in fighting games these days. Predator in MKX for example. Am I correct that Soul Calibur II started it by adding Link to the roster?
