For the past few years (except last year) TPCi has done a small announcement during the opening ceremony for the World Championships:

2013 - Mega Kangaskhan
2014 - Mega Slowbro
2015 - Pokken WiiU
2016 - Crabrawler
2017 - Clangorous Soulblaze

It is expected for them to reveal something related to Sword/Shield this time. Likely there will also be TCG and maybe more Pokken and Pokemon GO news as well.

Promo material seems to be big on fossils and archaeology for some reason, so maybe they'll show off the new fossil Pokemon?

I don't think there has ever been a connection between the theming of the event and the announcements made. Keep in mind the main events are the tournaments not the announcements.

If the theme means nothing and it's not the fossils, my next guess would be Gigantamax forms. We didn't see any in the trailer last week, so maybe that's because they were being saved for tomorrow. Long Meowth and Fat Pikachu would make for some good memey publicity at an event like Worlds.

Maybe I'm overreacting but I think I'm officially worried this game doesn't have much new in it. Like notably less new Pokemon and forms than Gen VI or VII.

Yeah, were only a few months away and I feel almost no reason to be excited for the new Pokmon.

I wasn't expecting anything major from the opening ceremony anyways. They've never dropped a megaton announcement there in the past. The reveal of a new Eevee (like red13n wanted) wasn't going to happen because that's a reveal of such huge magnitude which would be better off being revealed through an actual trailer or even a Pokemon Direct.

If there's any trend I've noticed with the reveals we've had during the opening ceremony, it's always been information that is relevant to VGC as a whole (Pokken due to it later becoming an official competitive event) or information about things that could shake up the VGC metagame (things like Mega Kangaskhan).

Yeah Crabrawler really shook up the metagame.

Anyway, the official site updated with more details about stuff.

- Pokemon caught in Raid Battles can have their hidden abilities.
- Dynamaxing doesn't require a held item.
- I guess you'll be rewarded items for battling online, a screenshot shows getting a Pearl Chain.
- There's different skill level tiers for online ranked play.
- Specifically mentions only two formats of competitive battles, singles and doubles, so I guess triple and rotation still aren't coming back.
- Players can host their own online competitions.
- You can use rental teams in ranked battles.

The Crabrawler reveal was well received since they promoted it by having it beat up on a bunch of VGC staple Pokemon. However, Crabrawler never lived up to the hype (although it did find its way onto my in-game team!)

The biggest reveal was showing Rhyperior, so that stupid "No Glaceon/Leafeon/Sinnoh/etc. evolutions because they're regional now" leak can finally stop being brought up every five seconds since it specifically said no Rhyperior.

People complained during the SM reveal cycle that too much was revealed.

It might've helped if you could evolve Crabrawler before the very end of the game. What were they thinking with that one?

It's pretty vague, but "more facts" could mean stuff like showing evolutions for things like Wooloo or Rolycoly, or it could just be nothing.

But on another note, I wanna say I think that gif in the tweet is neat. Pokemon games are usually pretty bad at making your friendly rivals actually feel like friends. Generally they're just people that show up at places you're at, and then there's talking and then they leave before you. But this gif of you and Hop just hanging out on a train already does a better job of making you feel like he's actually a friend.
