The optimist in me thinks it might be a genuine attempt to keep a person they like in their life, and possibly a realisation that they may still have feelings, and maybe even a misguided attempt to see if they've made the wrong choice.

The pessimist in me thinks she's yanking your chain to see if she can still make you squirm.

Honestly, neither side of me thinks you're under any obligation to be the better person and swallow your feelings. Males have enough trouble doing that as it is.

If there's a friendship worth keeping, surely it can wait until you're emotionally clear to let it happen.

When it comes to breakups, as coldhearted as it can seem sometimes, you really have to do what's best for your own mental health. As long as you aren't literally doing something to hurt her or damage her life, feel free to be as spiteful or immature as you want.

That's the thing though, I don't think being spiteful would be good for me. I think the best thing would be to act with dignity and grace, but also not be a pushover. I don't really have it in me to be outright mean, though. Not to someone who was one of the most important people in my life for years.

The replies are really toxic in this topic, but I'll just say if I were in your position, I would not meet up with her. Unnecessary heartache and BS that, if you look back on a little bit later, you'd figure you were better off without because it did not advance or hinder anything of importance.

If it's over it's over. An exchange of messages, maybe even a phone call or whatever, okay. More than that I can't really see the point of.

So, I responded:

"Hey ,

I appreciate you saying hello, but I'm not sure that would be a good idea. It's too early for me to be friends with you, even if that's where you're at. If I saw you now, I would probably just want to try and fix whatever broke in our relationship.

I hope you're doing ok."

I'm sure a lot of people on CE would consider that a pussy beta message or whatever, but life's too short imo. I just wanted to be clear without the angst.
