People not involved with FE should really shut up on what direction the series needs to follow.

Make their own game to their own liking.

Criticism of Japanese media falls on the deafest of ears. There's a lot of backwards stuff in a lot of it, and no Western social commentary will do anything to change it.

DQB2 can get pretty gay in the second chapter, depending on your character creation choices.

Sure why not?

I'm not part of that lifestyle, but I'm all for new stories and new perspectives in media. keeps things interesting.

I think it odd how lots of people complain about games being rehashes, but then complain when people try new angles and perspectives in stories.

The article raises some good points and the criticisms all seem valid. Considering how much 'shipping' is a big deal in this series they probably should make improvements in this area. Especially since the series is gaining popularity in the West.

I dont see anything wrong with wanting the gay options to...act more gay so to speak. That's what the article is saying if I understand correctly.

Also two of the gay options arent even explicitly gay

It's one thing if the developers decide to include it themselves, because they're doing so with a certain frame of mind and planning on how it'll interact within the game as a whole.

Shoehorning it in because of vocal critics and not because they had originally planned it just leads to more complaints that it's not done right (a "one off" mention, (unintentionally) offensive, (obviously) not implemented with the same amount of effort as other aspects of the game, etc.), hijacking the series away from how the creators envisioned the game to be.

Never played the game. Are the straight romances more involved or is everything equally shallow?

Persona has this thing where you can romance people and it means fuck all outside of one or two cutscenes.

Well that's exactly what happened here and what this article is about.

It really shouldn't be hard to insert a gay romance that actually has some effort in Fire Emblem considering how many romances there are in the game.

This game actually did away with the shipping mechanic.

Am I reading this right?

So why was I mad?

The answer is: because Edelgard's dialoguein fact, the text of all of the queer support dialoguesis 90% the same regardless of Byleth's gender with only a few (mostly inconsequential) lines of difference. Because that queer reading that hit me right in the gut emotionally has absolutely, positively no impact whatsoever on the actual story of Three Houses. It's not reflected in the game's world, its history, even the other characters closest to either Byleth or Edelgard. It's a lovely, touching moment, but that's all it is: a moment. And to quote Into the Woods, "Life is made of moments, even now and then a bad one, but if life were only moments, then you'd never know you had one."

Equality is "bad" now, apparently.

From what I can tell the issue here is the gay romances for women have the same dialogue for straight characters. For men they play out like friendships.

There's no actual 'queerness' to the game. Nothing about their sexuality actually matters or is reflected upon.

I mean, it was almost impossible to screw over gay male players harder. Three options for "Romance" and two of them are old men who friendzone you. Hope you like Linhardt!

(To be fair, I do like Linhardt, but still)

It reeks of throwing in a bunch of F/F options for fanservice reasons and then doing a M/M thing as an afterthought.

I actually don't mind the supports being the same with both genders. But at least give me a few options. I'm gay, I like picking the male main character, and it's kind of fun to get into that element of the game. It would be nice to at least have a few options there.

it is getting fucking old when "gay characters" = "we'll just have a ton of girl-on-girl action for the lonely neckbeards to fap over... oh, and maybe a couple of dude pairings. whatever"
