The El Paso shooting suspect's mother called the Allen, Texas, Police Department weeks before the shooting because she was concerned about her son owning an "AK" type firearm, lawyers for the family confirmed to CNN.

The mother contacted police because she was worried about her son owning the weapon given his age, maturity level and lack of experience handling such a firearm, attorneys Chris Ayres and R. Jack Ayres said.
During the call, the mother was transferred to a public safety officer who told her that -- based on her description of the situation -- her son, 21, was legally allowed to purchase the weapon

So in other words, guns are not at fault but the people that could've prevented it are.

But if anything, this story suggests that the laws need to be changed to restrict access better. Its not really the cops fault, obviously.

If that's all they had to go on, then they probably noted her concern as your typical concerns of a worrywart mother. Not even Red Flag laws would have acted on this.

lol this is AMERICA BRO, none of that matters when it comes to guns. but it should. will leaders use examples like this to maybe require better age limits or tests to prove maturity and teach experience? Probably not because they're idiots

you guys are arguing the wrong thing here and this debate will only be that. "what could they have done!?...i dunno but they should have done something!"...We need to use things like this as a reason why its important to determine someone's maturity, understanding of the weapon, and give proper training to people before they own a gun. Sure it won't stop 100% of cases, but allowing people like this to easily obtain guns is fucking asinine.

A discussion about gun control is different than "jesus, these cops are incompetent jackasses for letting this happen"

Pretty much why all this "report red flags" shit is bullshit when throwing up red flags isn't breaking any laws. You need to change gun laws in order to make this shit better.

In your own post, the guy was 21. Legally allowed to own a firearm. What was the cop supposed to do?

Almost all of the kids that commit these shootings have no criminal record. So how exactly are you going to keep law abiding people from owning guns?

I honestly wonder if she attempted to talk to her son at all about this, or did she just expect the police to come and take the gun away?

Like, did she ask him about his troubles and try to get him help or did she just not want to deal with it ya know?
