We started watching youtube because it was shitty amateur content that was easy and fun to watch. You just see some stupid 2 minute video and there was not a chance any of it was money driven. In short, we watched it to get away from commercial TV.

Now every video is 14 minutes long with 6 ads apiece (in 2 ad blocks), made by a professional team or streamer who has made it his job.

Impotent rant topic. I dunno, I just want a new channel for shit content.

1) workplaces typically won't allow adblock, so yes, sometimes I watch youtube videos without adblock
2) a third party unofficial solution to a problem does not excuse the product owner of criticism. Similarly, we shouldn't let bethesda off the hook for its incredibly bad attention to bug testing just because the mod community are good at making their own patches.
3) Obviously Google can do whatever they like with Youtube but that doesn't mean I can't pass comment on it, you realise it's fair to be critical of a business I'm sure?

Yeah why not? Both are services provided to customers, one is entertainment, the other is food hospitality, but fundamentally the purpose is the same: provide a service that customers want in order to make the business profitable.

For one, you can complain about the sandwich not being up to par with your expectations if you really want too. They literally exist to serve food and make the customer happy. Youtube does not.

What does youtube exist for that is fundamentally different from any other business providing a service? They want it to be profitable and popular (they're halfway there), that means it is open season for criticism. The sandwich place wants to make money too.

Weird take man, for two reasons;

1) You have the power to change the sandwich too. Maybe you think the bread they use is terrible. Why not bring your own bread in next time and swap it out, slap it on yourself just the way you like it. Nothing wrong with the sandwich now is there? So don't complain about how they make it. Seem reasonable? Or maybe is it just fair to admit that it's ok to say you think the sandwich sucks with no particular goal in mind when saying so.

The better argument you might have made is that the sandwich actually costs money whereas youtube is a free service paid for by advertising and therefore being subjected to the nuisance of commercialisation is just a reality we should accept given the size of the platform...but you didn't go there.

2) You read and replied to the bit I wrote about not being able to use adblock at work. You might have figured out from that that my machine is locked down to not allow plugins like that. You could also have work out that this means I use adblock at home.

(I work in software development, btw. This has nothing to do with tech savviness.)

Except there is no more old shit. Copyright trolls have exploded and so has youtubes trigger-happy automod system. Out of the 1,000 2007-2012 videos Ive favorited only 60ish remain and all my old subscriptions are gone. Finding pre-2014 videos that are still alive is like finding treasure.

People used to just make videos for fun or because they had some wacky idea that they wanted to share. Most people do youtube now because they want to make it big and get a shit ton of money like pewdiepie or jennamarbles or whoever. They come across as fake and everyone's videos feel incredibly similar and they all have the same cringey clickbait thumbnails. Yeah, there's still good channels out there but for the most part Youtube now is just millions of people who are clones of each other.

I feel like I can pick out most of the things they do that's not genuine so it doesn't bother me. When they do it I just think "yeah boy, get your money" lol. Plus, anybody with a good amount of friend tweak their performance in front of different friends. Nothing wrong with small amounts of pandering when you know people will get a kick out of it. These people are just doing it on a much higher level and turning it into a job. If someones not influenced by how others react to them it's probably cause they're a hardheaded asshole imo.
