23 y/o Can Cevik caused a stir as his graduation got off to a scary start when police mistook his homemade decoration on top of his cap for a BOMB!!

The Engineering Major at Florida International University embellished his cap with an open source micro controller board that displayed the message "FIU 2019".

But he was stopped from walking into the Ocean Bank Convocation Centre by police when they believed his contraption, complete with WIRES, a battery and an LED electronic board for an explosive device

He said "I thought i'd try something different. It wasn't intended to be harmful in any way. just as small creative project that i just wanted to show off for graduation"

He was stopped by police that needed to see what was on his head and ordered him to take it off with GUNS DRAWN and to place it on the ground and back away. He was also ordered to empty his pockets

In an insta post he said "all of a sudden security started leading people away from the local vicinity" as he explained to cops that his device with an Arduino Unio, palm sized computer micro-controller that can be used to reprogram small computers.

He said "Initially, i did feel nervous because i honestly was not expecting this. I probably should have, given the state of the socio-political climate with all these dangerous shootings and everything which unfortunately happens. To me it was for them to assume the worst".

His hat was confiscated by 5-0 and device on top of his hat was DESTROYED

Despite not getting his $20 worth of electronics back, he praised the measures taken by the cops for their "continued work to keep the community safe"

He was allowed to wear his replacement cap as police said the exposed wires and battery raised red flags even though the device was harmelss but Delrish Moss said although it seemed innocent, it has the potential to scare people

Devik didn't face any disciplinary action and was even able to take a photo with the officer that stopped him. Now his next step in life is to find a job

Would you think this hat is suspicious?

It's a battery, an arduino and a 7-segment display.

What about that could be a bomb?

all they see are wires and a little circuit board

if they know as little as i do about bombs or engineering then it's a reasonable assumption

I don't think bombs need a display for a countdown timer. That's more of a Hollywood thing.

In fact, I would argue that if you ever see wires and a little circuit board, the odds of it being a bomb are basically nil. The odds of it being some engineer's project are very high, however.

It's not that hard to use critical thinking skills. If his goal was to bring in a bomb, he could have done that inside of the billowing robe, rather than sitting on top of his hat.

Plus, I would assume he's graduating with other engineers, who should have recognized that it was harmless.

Im sorry but it clearly passes 3/4 of PIES and you can reasonably assume that the explosive in concealed. I dont fault anyone for the reaction.

I see a battery, display, and a micro-controller. There's nothing else to it. Which part of it was mistaken for explosive material? And why destroy it after examining the device and determining there's nothing dangerous about it?

Regardless of if I would mistake this for a bomb or not surely he would know someone would as at a glance it looks like one. Anything for attention I guess.
