I had never heard about them even once until I googled "games with good story" in like 2014. Even then I had to go through a bit of digging before I had seen BG I/II mentioned.

That said I just finished Chapter 5 of the first game a couple hours ago and I fucking love it.

Honestly not sure how popular they were as I was a just a kid when they came out, even if I loved them then.

But they've pretty much always topped the "Best RPG" lists since they came out, alongside other black isle/bioware isometric RPGs of that time.

Interplay reported worldwide sales of nearly 700,000 copies for Baldur's Gate by June,[62] and it was the United States' second-best-selling computer game during the first half of 1999, behind SimCity 3000.[63] As of September, it had sold above 300,000 units and earned roughly $15 million in revenues in the country during 1999 alone. A writer for PC Accelerator remarked that this success "created an almost audible sigh of relief from publisher Interplay."[64] By November 1999, Baldur's Gate had sold roughly 1 million units worldwide.[65] It claimed ninth place for 1999 in the United States, with a total of 356,448 sales that year.[66] At $15.7 million in revenue, it was the country's seventh-highest-grossing computer game of 1999.[67]

Sales of Baldur's Gate continued in 2000: by March, it had surpassed 500,000 copies sold in the United States, which led Desslock of GameSpot to describe the title as an "undisputed commercial blockbuster".[68] U.S. sales had risen to 600,000 units by April 2001,[69] while global sales totaled 1.5 million copies that May.[70] The game proceeded to sell 83,208 units in the United States from February 2001 through the first week of November alone.[71] Worldwide, Baldur's Gate ultimately surpassed 2.2 million sales by early 2003.[72]

i wouldn't be surprised if this news were buried since this was probably at the height of the ps1's/n64's popularity.

I'm honestly blown away by Baldur's Gate playing it for the first time in 2017. I can't imagine what it was like when it first came out.

The sequel is also immeasurably better in every way.

We were thinking of naming the baby Ellipsis, but it seemed so...typographical.

Can't wait to play it!

I'm just now on Chapter 6. That's the last one in this game, right?

Seven chapters total.

Including the prologue?

If not, cool. I knew that felt short.

You've done the expansion stuff as well, right?

Think that's just included in the enhanced editions and most any you can find now, but both provide great stuff/challenges (Durlag's Tower, Ulgoth's Beard etc)

Did you do Durlag's Tower? It's pretty much the final dungeon, albeit a bonus one.

And screw that boss at the end of the quest line. That damn delayed instant death attack with no hint of the way to resist it.
