According to the story Lang railed against anyone who said it was canned but the investors were saying otherwise. Sounds like he was just DC'ing.

Are you nuts? Several of the performers are quintessential 70s, particularly Santana, The Who, and Jimi Hendrix but it's certainly not limited to them (The Grateful Dead, CCR, and Janis Joplin certainly strike chords in 70s music aficionados).

So what's the actual reason they can't get this shit off and running? Money? Permits? Afraid half a million people are gonna show up whacked out on peyote?

Dentsu Aegis, the major financial backer, pulled out about three months ago (because Lang is incompetent). Since the contract with the artists was with both Dentsu and Lang, once Dentsu pulled out they were no longer beholden to play. LiveNation and another major backer declined to assist after.

Lang didn't apply for permits in the original location, Watkins Glenn, until way too late. His secondary location, Vernon Downs, declined three or four permit applications (because Lang is incompetent) because of a clear lack of planning, the most recent just a week ago. The fest was supposed to happen in two weeks.

No venue, no permits, no acts. Music festivals have changed a lot in the past decade; they're now generally well-oiled machines with immense planning, and there's at least 15+ across NA alone. Lang just wanted to have a good time, maaaaan, which won't fly anymore. Woodstocks '69 and '94 happened in spite of him, not because of him.

didnt know it was even a thing

The initial lineup had Jay-Z, Dead & Co, Country Joe, Hot Tuna, Miley Cyrus, Imagine Dragons, The Black Keys, The Killers, Santana, The Lumineers, Robert Plant, Chance the Rapper, Janelle Monae, The Zombies, David Crosby, Canned Heat, etc etc etc
If pulled off would be an interesting mix of decades and genres.

It really didn't get much further than paying the artists. Who, btw, were mostly paid in full and now don't have to perform.

Well, Coachella is the biggest name for NA festivals. Second in attendance numbers (100k/day) to Lollapalooza (120k). Lots of 40k+ ones around though. Bonnaroo is probably the closest to Woodstock for general atmosphere/camping/etc.

Generally, a festival has to pay an artist in advance, usually 33-50% from what I've read. But since this wasn't an annual event with a clear history, the bigger acts can often want 100% up front. I assume all the acts I listed were fully paid as part of the $18m Dentsu/Lang fought over. Oh yes, Lang sued the financial backer as well, sending a positive message to any potential suitors. I assume the smaller acts were only paid 33% if at all though.

Like I've said, Bonnaroo is essentially what Woodstock is, though lots of festivals get close in spirit.

That said it's innately hard to market a festival now in the true spirit of an overcrowded farm full of hippies listening to counterculture music. Especially an anniversary of that cultural milestone. Do you only get legacy acts and hope for a Desert Trip haul but virtually no young people? Go indie/hippie music and probably fail financially? Consumers have a lot of choice for live music now. I honestly dig the lineup because it's more varied than the festivals I've attended.

I stand corrected - https://pitchfork.com/thepitch/beyond-woodstock-revisiting-the-other-summer-of-69-music-festivals/

I'd still want to attend Woodstock if I could though. Just most of those too.

I can't. and I'm not arguing against it being THE event of 69

I'm ragging on its general legacy. everybody praises it as this big drug fueled fuckfest of a concert, blasting jams you coyld hear across state lines......but id wager 80% of tye event was rather unremarkable

in the grand scheme of festivals, Woodstock seems pretty.....meh

Woodstock 69 was in a totally different culture. That was when going to a festival like that basically amounted to camping on the ground around it / laying down and smoking weed and/or tripping balls the whole time.

That kind of shit doesn't really happen anymore. Maybe in Europe.

Sure, there's a lot of focus on just that festival, but it absolutely was a cultural milestone. You can't get half a million hippies together for a weekend that ran long into Monday and for it to not have actually meant something to a bunch of those attendees, especially considering the lack of reported violence that was much more common at concerts back then (Stones using the Hells Angel's as security, riots, etc). And again, music festivals were absolutely not like they are now with respect to organization or lineup.

I had a professor for my history seminar course on America in the 1960s. He turned down a scholarship to Harvard because he was a hippie DJ who went to Woodstock so I've heard about it firsthand. Unremarkable to you and maybe many people today, removed five decades. Do you attend music festivals now and have a frame of reference, or have any interest in what it actually was? This was a watershed cultural moment, whether or not you care about it.

Yesterday it was reported that headliner Miley Cyrus had pulled out of the festival, joining the Raconteurs, the Lumineers and original Woodstock 1969 performers Santana, John Sebastian and Country Joe McDonald, all of whom since last night have said publicly that theyre not performing. Earlier, headliners Jay-Z and the Dead & Co., as well as John Fogerty, confirmed that they will not be performing.
