26 y/o Offensive Lineman, Joe Thuney intentionally FAILED the NFL's "Wonderlic Test", that questions the players cognitive ability during the pre-draft combine in 2016 because he was worried he would be TOO SMART to play the NFL!!

The New England Patriots player, a scholar athlete at North Carolina State intentionally failed to answer 11 of the 50 questions on the test that is supposed to give teams an idea of a potential draft pick's intelligence..

He answered all the other 39 questions correctly and was picked in the 3rd round during the NFL Draft and has since started every game of his 3 year career while winning a pair of Super Bowls

Despite his failure to answer every question, he was already known to be very intelligent prior to being drafted

He was a finalist for the Campbell Trophy, that goes for college football players with the best academics, community service and on field performance

Previous winners incldue former Florida QB turned baseball player Tim Tebow and Penn State linesman John Urschel who later pursued a career in mathematician

Fears of being "too smart" for the NFL isn't new as Former Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals running back Rashard Mendenhall felt the same before retiring in 2013 and became a screenwriter for HBO's Ballers

He recalls being asked "If you have all these other interests like reading, dancing or art, what makes you a football player?. There is this idea of a football player is and what he looks like. Especially playing in a place like Pittsburgh, where the Steelers are such a part of the history of the town, the fans live, die and breath it. While i respected that culture totally and knew that iw as a part of it, i would tweet a picture of a book that i was reading and would be people write "What are you reading books? you should be reading a playbook"

For comparison, Tom Brady scored a 33, Aaron Rodgers scored a 35 and Pat McINally scored a perfect 50. Ryan Fitzpatrick who attended Harvard scored a 49 as did Mike Mamula

Less impressive scores were recorded by Tennessee Titans QB Vince Young who got a SIX and Sebastian Janikowski a 9 and Morris Caliborne who scored the lowest in recorded history, a FOUR

The Wonderlic Test was created by E.F Wonderlic to measure cognitive ability in math, vocabulary and reasoning as the average for a chemist was 31

Do you think it's true the the NFL looks down on "Smart People" to play there?

I mean the test is pretty tight on time. It's possible if he got 39 he actually timed out before answering all questions. I think you get like 12 minutes to answer 50 questions

Also 39 isn't exactly a fail when an average score is 20
