26 y/o Offensive Lineman, Joe Thuney intentionally FAILED the NFL's "Wonderlic Test", that questions the players cognitive ability during the pre-draft combine in 2016 because he was worried he would be TOO SMART to play the NFL!!

The New England Patriots player, a scholar athlete at North Carolina State intentionally failed to answer 11 of the 50 questions on the test that is supposed to give teams an idea of a potential draft pick's intelligence

He answered all the other 39 questions correctly and was picked in the 3rd round during the NFL Draft and has since started every game of his 3 year career while winning a pair of Super Bowls

Despite his failure to answer every question, he was already known to be very intelligent prior to being drafted

He was a finalist for the Campbell Trophy, that goes for college football players with the best academics, community service and on field performance

Previous winners incldue former Florida QB turned baseball player Tim Tebow and Penn State linesman John Urschel who later pursued a career in mathematician

Fears of being "too smart" for the NFL isn't new as Former Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals running back Rashard Mendenhall felt the same before retiring in 2013 and became a screenwriter for HBO's Ballers

He recalls being asked "If you have all these other interests like reading, dancing or art, what makes you a football player?. There is this idea of a football player is and what he looks like. Especially playing in a place like Pittsburgh, where the Steelers are such a part of the history of the town, the fans live, die and breath it. While i respected that culture totally and knew that iw as a part of it, i would tweet a picture of a book that i was reading and would be people write "What are you reading books? you should be reading a playbook"

For comparison, Tom Brady scored a 33, Aaron Rodgers scored a 35 and Pat McINally scored a perfect 50. Ryan Fitzpatrick who attended Harvard scored a 49 as did Mike Mamula

Less impressive scores were recorded by Tennessee Titans QB Vince Young who got a SIX and Sebastian Janikowski a 9 and Morris Caliborne who scored the lowest in recorded history, a FOUR

The Wonderlic Test was created by E.F Wonderlic to measure cognitive ability in math, vocabulary and reasoning as the average for a chemist was 31.

Do you think it's true the the NFL looks down on "Smart People" to play there?

Why the fuck does the NFL give tests in the first place? That's weirder than purposely botching the test.

You think you can just walk on a field and immediately start playing football because you're swole?

That's like saying you can be a pro overwatch player just because you have hands.

It's not just the playbook. Being able to make reads and adjust based on what you see the opposing team doing is a factor as well.

Yeah but is that possible if you have been playing football since highschool? You don't have to be book smart to be playbook smart.

You honestly think that high school football and college football are the same as the NFL?
Hell even high school and college are miles apart.
Again this is akin to, going to use overwatch again because it fits:
Playing causal then saying I can go pro because I play this game alot.

There are outliers that are so gifted that they didn't really need to read a playbook but that's extremely rare.

Anyone in the draft is good enough. I don't get your logic here.

IIRC, it's a timed test, much like most IQ test. I believe the test is used to see how good players make decisions under duress or timed events.

From my understanding, the test is more important for quarterbacks since they'll be making a large number of decisions under pressure.

The NFL game is more competitive (players are faster, stronger, better, etc) so I guess this test is more useful for them. And college football is way different from NFL football, there's a lot to learn (I mean, it's the same sport, but think of the difference between Overwatch and teamfortress or COD- shooters but they're still pretty different).

Huh I thought it was only 250 people after the national combine. I'm sure thousands get knocked out at regionals, so I mean surely the 250 have something going for them.

And Christ I know college ball and pro ball is different. Blah blah running vs passing. But I'm pretty sure anyone serious about going pro knows the fucking differences.
