You would be SHOCKED at how many people will only play an army if the lore was good.

Army could be literally "every time this unit is hit, the attacking model takes that much damage" and they would be "yeah.... but their fluff is lame, now the <army that blows in the worst way> is what I play, they have AWESOME back stories"

I can not get my head around that mentality

I just don't get it. when I was first starting out with Warhammer 40k I was way into Tau due to it being a stepping stone from Gundams. Well one guy at my local shop said he used to play them until he got into the lore of 40k and found out that "they are the space commies!" and dumped them. after he spent HUNDREDS on the models....

I mean fair.

I just mean that at the end of the day, the reasons others play are their own.

I'm more of a gameplay person, story can be nice but ehh.

That being said if the gameplay is only okay, yeah I'd like some story to amuse me. But I'll make stuff up if there isn't any. x3

Of course couldn't and wouldn't drop that kind of cash either. So that's something that on a personally level can't even comprehend, though I kind of get some.

If you are playing Warhammer 40k for the crunch, expect to eventually get burned hard. All armies go through periods where they are absolute shit. Today's overpowered unit/army is tomorrow's "don't play this if you ever want to win a game again" monstrosity.

Hence, many people play for fluff, because fluff is usually mostly unchanging (Necrons excepted - fucking Matt Ward...).

Also, if your friend spent "hundreds" on his models... that's probably a basic starter force and not much more, going by today's abso-fucking-lutely ridiculous prices. Probably a good time to ditch an army if he didn't like them, honestly...
