Should I bother contacting Nintendo? Yes, I know it is supposedly "free" based on a Vice article, but even if it is free I'm still going to have to mail my stuff, right

Or should I just suck it up and buy new joy cons and just accept that I'll have to buy new joy cons again in two years (or maybe I'll just get a switch pro by then)

I was only without my joycon for like a week when I sent it in. I guess if you can't bear to stop playing your Switch for that long then buying a second set of joycons isn't the end of the world. And then while you're using the new ones you can send the broken one in for repair, so that when the new one eventually drifts you'll still be good to go.

I feel like the lawsuit probably won't go anywhere now that Nintendo's not only repairing them for free, but offering refunds to people that already paid for them.

Or another way to look at it is the lawsuit already served its purpose, since it seemingly scared Nintendo into changing their stance on the issue.

what timing, the other day I got a can of contact cleaner which worked like a charm on 3/4 joycons (individual L/R, not pairs) I was having issues with.... the other one it made better but not completely cured

Buy new ones, send your old ones in for repair, and return your new ones once the repaired ones are back.

Try electronic contact cleaner first.
It fixed our problems without much hassle. And unlike a new pair of joycons, it only cost a few dollars to get.

No, what's cheap is nature, making bears so much more dangerous than I. So I evened the playing field. With a door.

The only reason they are doing it is because of the publicity and the lawsuit. They weren't gonna do it otherwise as was noted from prior responses.
