Honestly I was thinking recently about upgrading my phone to an xr but at this point it makes more sense to wait for the new release.

The biggest thing is the new camera design which apparently looks like a big square on the back. Slightly unappealing visually, IMO

Nope, currently have the iPhone X but will hold out for the 2020 version (rumored stuff like having 5G capability, Promotion screen, USB-C connector instead of Lightning, etc). This year's model sounds like the most uninteresting update for any iPhone. Based on the leaks the only improvements are the new camera and chip, the rest of the hardware is the same as the current version.

I'm using an iPhone 6s Plus and I'll probably use it until the thing dies. Given how long iPhones tend to last that could still be a few more years yet.

I remember reading that was due to AT&T putting that out. They wanted to be the first provider to have 5G out so they started to broadcast their label (the small letters on the top of the iPhones that has your signal strength and says 3G, LTE, etc) as 5G even though it wasnt true 5G, just an overclocked version like you mentioned. I believe the other providers threatened litigation with them over it but last I heard they're havent changed anything and it still says 5G.

You'd be better off just upgrading to an 8 honestly, it'll last at least a whole year longer (if not more) update-wise.

On-topic, I'm more interested in the Xr2 or whatever it's gonna be. If the rumours about how the camera looks are true then fuck that but if it's okay and they actually make the screen full HD (imagine releasing a phone with a 6.1" 720p screen in fucking 2019) then I'd probably go with that instead.

Eh, from a "dollars spent per gigabyte" aspect, getting the 7 makes more sense. They have 128 gigabyte 7's that are cheaper than 8's with 64 gigabytes

I couldn't care less about the hardware or updates. My current phone doesn't even have the latest IOS update on it. Also, IIRC, isn't the 7 the last one with fingerprint identification? I'd like that if possible

No the 8 and 8+ have the home button still. The 7 and 7+ will for sure be discontinued with the announcement of the new phones, so idk when you'd want to do your upgrade but stock levels will start dwindling from mid-September on.

Ah ok I don't know why i had it in my head that the 7 was the last one with the home button. I pretty much assumed that they would start discontinuing the 7 soon so I figured I'll probably upgrade within the next month or so.

I'm under AT&T and my phone (S10+) reads "5G E" if I'm connected to one of their LTE-A towers. It's really just an enhanced version of their 4G LTE network, but you only get those enhanced 4G speeds if you're on the upgraded towers. For example, my phone will display the original "4G LTE" when I visit my parents back home.

True 5G has been a crapshoot anyway - my current speeds are more than enough.
