Nth cousin is determined by which grandparents/great grand parents/ etc you share in common.

Nth Removed is determined by the generational gap between you and your cousin

My parents are sixth cousins I believe. They didn't find out until after they were married. My paternal grandparents are step-cousins and share a mutual set of first cousins (so my grandpa's half-brother is my grandma's brother-in-law and double first cousin. He also had another set of double first cousins.)

Also my maternal grandfather's parents had the same last name but were not related.

Still confused. Based on that pic, my 2nd cousin is my first cousin once removed. However I thought a 2nd cousin was the child of your 1st cousin.

Barring a shared last name I don't think we'd ever even realize we were fifth cousins. I can't even tell you want my great-grandparents names are.

That's distant enough you'd very possibly never even know. I don't really know any relatives beyond first cousins, not like we had huge massive family reunions that covered that much ground.

I have a friend who married her 5th cousin I think it was. They knew going in. It does seem weird but it's distant enough I suppose.

Correct. The chances of you sharing the same surname is also extremely unlikely because you'd be what, 3-4 generations removed?

I don't think I even know of any 3rd cousins of mine. 5cor would be a 6th cousin line, way too distant to comprehend. Our shared parent would be my great^5-grandparent, aka someone who died 150 years ago. We really wouldn't be relatives by any definition.

Just because I have Danish royalty in my blood doesn't mean I need to keep up the cycle of incest.

In seriousness, it wouldn't be a deal breaker at that distance if we met up and then discovered after the fact, but if I met her at a family reunion as the old meme goes? Nah.

5th cousin once removed is much further removed than necessary to make sure there wouldn't be any problems related to inbreeding, so fine. I've never met anyone that far removed in my family anyway.
