The Last Samurai grossed a total of $456 million[2] at the box office and was well-received upon its release, receiving praise for the acting, writing, directing, score, visuals, costumes and messages. It was nominated for several awards, including four Academy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, and two National Board of Review Awards.

iirc the whole point is tom cruise plays an american who goes to japan and shows them how to use guns instead of swords

Which is really dumb from a historical perspective. Japan utilized guns a great deal when they were first introduced by the Portuguese.

it wasn't how to use guns in particular, mainly training the troops. Even our modern day soldiers need to learn.

I havent seen it in a long time but I remember really liking it. The scene where Cruise gets ambushed by a bunch of ronin in a back alley is still great.

I liked it, and agree that the "white man" wasn't necessarily the last samurai. I *did* think he was going to die at the end.. still not sure if that would have made for a better movie.

I know but my problem with the film is that it paints the Samurai as seeing guns as dishonorable but historically the Japanese made extensive use of black powder weapons. Records from the Imjin War show that Japanese warriors armed with firearms were very effective against Korean and Chinese forces who still used bow and arrows.

They used guns in both the Sengoku Jidai period and the Meiji Restoration period (as well as modern ships). So yeah that was definitely made up for the movie. But the final charge was based on an actual event during the last battle of the Satsuma Rebellion when they had depleted all of their ammunition.

It's a really good movie but the woke crowd would eviscerate it today.

Did you even watch the movie?

Though to be fair the superwoke crowd is a hateful, thoughtless mess so it wouldn't even surprise me. :/

Which is annoying because there was an actual English samurai by the name of William Adams in the 1600s.

So the woke crowd getting mad over cultural appropriation are just idiots who need to get woke.

The anonymous unnamed people on social media who brigade campaigns against perceived slights?

Who knows, it's honestly kind of a straw man. I really doubt people would get that upset over that movie, but people who've never seen it do tend to eye roll at the tom cruise samurai association, even though the plot really isn't cultural appropriation.
