Cause your not betting money, you're buying an asset that you think will appreciate in value, and in a lot of cases pay you cash on the form of dividends just for owning it. Yeah there's a level of risk involved, there's risk to everything in life. Even if you just put your money into a savings account you're taking the risk that inflation could outpace whatever interest you accrue and depreciate your capital. Or you can bury it in your back yard in case all of the banks fail, in which case it will absolutely depreciate in value every year.
