Both.

I wouldn't go out at like 3 in the morning, but I'm not worried about people breaking into my place.

Hella safe, I live in a suburb where no one comes to do anything. All my neighbors are federal employees and current or former military and they all have a thousand people at their house at any given time so you'd have to be really, really high and lost to even get here first of all and then to think it's worthwhile to try to break in secondly.

People will leave their cars running when they go into the grocery store or gas station to get something, which I haven't seen in a long time.

Safe. Voted safest city in the state.

Parents live in a safe place on the other side of the state, but 20 min south is pretty sketch.

no. but you'll probably be fine by being aware of your surroundings, having social skills and being reasonably street smart.

look out for your neighbors and don't be a dick to them, and they'll likely look out for you, too. even if they don't like you much.

Kind of this. You'll definitely get your ass kicked for being an asshole or going to the bar on the wrong night. Hell, some my cousins are people who decide if it's the wrong night. They are the type to provoke fights to let off steam. Growing up here I had to avoid hanging out with my own family in certain situations

Yeah it feels really weird. My last neighborhood was also extremely safe, despite being more of a mixed commercial/residential area instead of a pure residential area. I kinda miss the sounds of the city and whatnot but I'll take this, too.

I just looked it up, and according to Google I live in the second safest city in Canada. Downtown is kinda sketchy, but I generally avoid going there and everything is all good.

Safe, I live in a nice little mountain town with a small population. Wildlife is a bigger threat than the people. The county I live in has had 8 recorded break-ins since 2001, I remember reading that when I was looking into the crime rates before I bought property here.

I also frequently leave the car running if I run into the grocery store for a few minutes, I can leave the front door open at night with the screen door closed and feel okay about it, minus the rare event a black bear stumbles into my yard.

There is virtually no crime

Most people on my block leave their doors unlocked and garage doors open when they go to work. I've even had to walk in and check to see if a stove or two has been left on when a neighbor calls. I just walk right in.

But it's a town of only like 10k.

Here, yes.

But I'm surrounded by Durham, Goldsboro, Fayetteville, Rocky Mount.

And Lumberton is a little ways down the highway too.

They're all shit holes.

Mostly safe, unless you wander across someone having a bad day or purposely seek it.

Usually you can avoid or mitigate trouble if you just be smart or cautious with general common sense. Unfortunately it sometimes seeks you out... like the guy who was randomly calling me slurs and trying to fight me in walmart. I think he was drunk or under the influence, but nothing came of it. I did literally nothing to trigger it cept being in the area.

You might get shot, but that's mostly due to people being idiots with guns vs actual hate.

According to Pokemon Go, it is dangerous as there is lots of flooding in part of the state and today the heat index was 96 at one point.

All of you would be horrified at where I live I guess. But it's my generational home. And all in all I feel perfectly safe. I go on walks at 1am a lot of times. This house has been here for 65 years. Family has been in this city over 100. No one starts shit with people living here without half the street out and ready to start shit back. It sounds weird but it's the way it is.

Literal honest to god mexican barrio. Not like a movie would portray it. Not like one in LA either.
A few open fields on my block. Most are salt of the earth, low income, menial labor job having people like me. Have the old family of drug dealers a few homes down. All the homes except their's are really kept up nice though. The tracks and the freeway 3 blocks up.
But there's cops coming and going from all around the county 24/7 a street over since the prison is a mile down it. The city's baseball fields that are always in use especially right now is a block away with a park. Got a church a block over. The city yards two blocks down the other way.
And yet the homes right here are going for 200k on the market. Which excuse me while I laugh my ass off at anyone willing to pay that sort of money of this. I love my home and would never sell it, but it nor any other around here are worth half that.
