Why are only like 7 or 8 showing up, the ones from the original Smash 64? It's been 10 years since I gamed so I'm out of the loop with all this online stuff which I never bothered with in Brawl.

They decided to make the original 8 from Smash 64 the starting roster. You unlock the rest.

Don't worry though, they unlock pretty quickly. One run of Classic Mode per character usually does it, or a couple Vs. matches each. You can also try completing World of Light but most people seem to hate that mode.

I must have misunderstood what people meant when they said that that you get all the characters that ever were in Smash. I thought every character would appear just like that, from the very beginning.

-You start with the 8 starting characters from Smash 64.
-You unlock the rest of the ones in the base game by playing, either Classic mode, Vs. Matches, or World of Light.
-Piranha Plant, Joker, and the upcoming Hero, Banjo & Kazooie and the last two characters are DLC.

Does the game come with a manual or something for all these different modes? It's so overwhelming seeing all these options. Is World of Light this game's adventure mode/subspace emissary? Is it as bad as the latter?

Classic Mode is basically any other fighting game's Arcade Mode.

World of Light is this game's Adventure Mode (found in the Spirits menu) but it's nothing like Subspace Emissary. Some consider that to be a bad thing. I thought it was alright since it focused what makes Smash Bros. fun (which is the battles)...but it's nothing but battles strewn over a map. And it lasts like 20 hours if you want to get everything. Also if you need an explanation for a mode I believe it gives you a short tutorial of what it's like when you first click on it.

Ah I see. And what are spirits? Is there like... leveling up in this game? Right now there's an event going on and apparently spirits will appear while I'm playing and it will affect my game... everything the tutorial said went completely over my head, I had literally just started the game.

They should make it like WWE 2k, where you can pay money to unlock everything. That way TC doesn't need to make a topic whining about the game supposedly not having enough characters. >_>

Spirits are essentially like equipment, and they only affect battles outside of Spirit mode if you specifically make a ruleset to include them. (There are some modes they can't be used at all though.) In Spirits Mode, there are hundreds of "characters" you can fight (they're really just static images) and by defeating them, you get the Spirit and can equip it. The more you use it, the more it levels up and becomes stronger.

Think of it as like gacha collection except without the actual gacha system (random drops, using special currency to have better chances, etc.)

Nice thanks!

8 character battles though... there's just no way that works well. It was hectic enough with just 4 characters back in the day!

Do you unlock any of the characters by the "challenger approaches!" method of melee or are they all automatically unlocked when you fill the conditions like beating classic mode.

How many characters are there now, minus DLC?

Yeah, it's done by the same "challenger approaches" method. Cool thing here is that if you lose, it lets you rematch them in the Games & More menu.

Without DLC I think there's 69 characters not counting the "echo" clones.

I always enjoyed those, it was like an rpg, getting a new character. Who remembers how psyched they were back in melee when they got mewtwo, that was insane for us.

I was gonna try online but then remembered you need a subscription for nintendo's online now so that's on the backburner until further notice. Gonna experiment with the game a bit. I'm not missing much if I just ignore some of the events going on like that recent splatoon event right? I honestly prefer playing at my own pace and so will more than likely miss lots of events going on online.

No, while there are a few spirits that can only be found during events IIRC, other than that the only thing the event does is give you bonus awards for completing the spirit challenge. Beyond that, you'll obtain a majority of the spirits just playing World of Light/Classic Mode/Spirit Board.
